On with the news from this week 😄
🚀 The latest residential construction news from new sources around Australia for the news week ending 13-02-2025 🔥
A clear theme is emerging in Australia’s housing sector: Big Problems, Fresh Ideas, and New Hope
(Sounds like a Star Wars Movie title).
The Problem: A Lack of Affordable Housing
The news this week highlights how serious the housing crisis is. Articles like “Aussie building company collapses owing $3 million and homes left unfinished” and “The five areas in Australia hit hardest by the housing crisis” show how rising costs and failed projects are affecting everyday Australians.
It’s not all bad news, though. These challenges are forcing conversations about real solutions and getting more people thinking about how to fix things. This is part of the reason we started this blog.
The Opportunity: Fresh Ideas and New Technology
Even in hard times, good ideas are popping up. For example, a “New 3D-printed home under construction in Perth using the state’s first wall-building robot” shows how technology can make building homes faster and cheaper.
Another positive step is “Build to rent homes for essential workers in Sydney”, which is helping meet specific housing needs. Meanwhile, changes in construction laws and new affordable housing projects in North Parramatta are signs that the government is starting to take action.
The Way Forward: Time for Change
This week’s stories make one thing clear—real change is needed. Articles like “Australia’s housing crisis is driven by lip-service and an investment culture” show how current systems aren’t working for regular Aussies.
Some fresh ideas, like our Boomer Bonds and Community Land Trusts, could help make housing more affordable. There’s also a big push to cut red tape and make lending easier, which could open up more opportunities for people to get into the housing market.
As one commenter put it, “Change the rules, and people will change how they play the game.”
Why It Matters
Housing isn’t just about buildings—it’s about people, families, and communities. The challenges are big, but with smart ideas and teamwork, there’s a real chance to create lasting change.
🤔 Our View on This Week’s Most Important News
🌯🌯🌯🌯🌯 13-02-2025 - Australian government announces major housing finance reforms - LINK
The Australian government has announced significant housing finance reforms. These "commonsense changes" aim to make it easier for Australians, especially those with Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) debts, to secure home loans.
By adjusting mortgage serviceability assessments to account for HELP debts, the government seeks to treat graduates more fairly in the housing market.
Additionally, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) and the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) will update guidelines to remove barriers that have previously hindered financing for new construction projects.

NSW home builder placed into administration with houses left unfinished – [LINK]
Our comment: There are ways to avoid this. First, do thorough due diligence on your builder using our C4 Checklist.
Authorities could also adopt a version of our Builderpulse framework. Instead of reviewing licenses and turnover 12 months in arrears, a digital tool like Builderpulse—tracking more data points—could assess a company’s financial health more frequently. This isn't about punishing anyone; it’s about identifying risks early and working with advisors to manage them.
Let’s prevent builders from taking on more work than they can handle. Building a home is a huge investment for homeowners, so why do regulators let companies collapse so easily? Regular reporting could reveal if someone is siphoning money from a business. That’s not poor management—it’s theft.
Find out what your builder ate for breakfast with our C4 checklist (not exactly, but you'll know them quite well by asking these questions)

Our comment: Classic example of all talk, no action. This industry lobby group does little more than make announcements and collect membership fees. 🌯🌯🌯🌯 Australia's housing crisis is driven by lip-service, hypocrisy, and an investment culture – [LINK]
Our comment: This crisis is a case study in political theatre. While politicians offer symbolic gestures, the situation worsens. We need a wartime-level mobilisation with immediate relief, medium-term reforms, and a 30-year housing strategy free from political cycles. Anything less than bold, systemic reform is surrendering to failure.

Our comment: We urge the HIA to stop endorsing builders and tradespeople who fail to demonstrate basic quality management systems in their work. 🌯🌯 The nightmare next door: neighbours say housing project has damaged their homes – [LINK]

Our comment: Of course it is! Housing is a basic human need. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs makes that clear. This shouldn’t even be up for debate.

Article excerpt: "It’s hard to see how the Albanese government’s housing targets can be met under current conditions. Land prices and construction costs must fall to make developments viable."

"Australia's housing crisis is driven by lip-service, hypocrisy, and an investment culture" – [LINK]
Our comment: Yes, and this is amplified by groups like HIA and QMBA. These are just RTOs who sell insurance. All they do is complain and collect fees. Pure lip service. Create value, improve industry quality. Be a front line defense to ensure trades and builders perform and meet Australian Standard requirements.

🌯🌯🌯 Proposed social housing development in Busselton targeted by NIMBY graffiti – [LINK]
Our comment: Brick is a smart choice for this building. It’s low-maintenance and reduces long-term costs. Render, on the other hand, is a terrible option. Even if applied well, it requires repainting every 5–10 years, which means expensive scaffolding and painting. Stick with brick for sensible, cost-effective building.

All our published checklists are available to download via the Checklists Link in the navigation menu or directly at https://www.constructor.net.au/checklists/.
Please note: You’ll need to be a member and to log in to access the content.
This is necessary to protect our work from being scraped by AI bots, which are currently unregulated and contributing to one of the largest instances of intellectual property theft in history. These checklists represent nearly two years of effort to input and format, and we want to ensure they are used responsibly.
Although we have half a clue, we'd love to add a Tar Pit to our blogging platform to slow down the AI bots that constantly crawl the website.
All of this unwanted, automated nonsense consumes bandwidth, slows down page speed, and clogs up the internet—while the companies behind it profit, harvest our data, and sell it back to us with a smug look of superiority on their faces.
To download, simply enter your email when prompted. This allows us to assign you a free license—nothing more. Once completed, you’ll be able to view and download the checklists.
Each checklist is formatted on A4-sized paper for easy printing. Be aware that the files are larger than typical PDFs, around 25–35 MB each, as they are saved in CMYK (print-ready) format. This ensures the best quality for printing, even if it makes the files a bit “chunkier.”
Enjoy the checklists, we hope they help you identify quality improvements in your new home or next project - or at least, get you thinking.
